Celebrating the people, partnerships and shared knowledge that help us create meaningful ceremonies.

I recently attended a conference hosted by the Australian Federation of Civil Celebrants (AFCC), which inspired me to write from the heart about the value of connection, networking and the camaraderie that comes from being among like-minded people.

Every wedding, funeral, memorial or milestone celebration tells a story. As we celebrate "International Celebrants' Day" this November, it’s an opportunity to recognise the important role celebrants play in our communities and reflect on what helps us deliver our best for those who entrust us with their special moments.

Behind every meaningful ceremony is a celebrant who listens, creates and cares — often supported by a wider network of colleagues, professionals and community connections that help make each experience even more special.

Why networking matters to celebrants

Being a celebrant can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be very solitary. Much of our work happens behind the scenes — researching, writing personalised ceremonies, meeting families, managing the details and ensuring everything comes together on the day.

Connecting and networking with fellow celebrants helps us share ideas, exchange experiences, ask questions and learn from one another. These connections provide valuable opportunities to strengthen our skills, build relationships and create a supportive community that recognises that we can achieve more when we share our knowledge and experience.

Staying informed, inspired and connected

Celebrancy continues to evolve, with changing expectations, new ideas, professional development opportunities and, for marriage celebrants, important legal and regulatory responsibilities.

Networking provides encouragement and reassurance. Having trusted colleagues to turn to for advice, a different perspective or simply a conversation with someone who understands, can make a real difference in an often deeply personal profession. It can also spark creativity. Hearing how another celebrant approaches a cultural tradition, incorporates a meaningful ritual, supports a grieving family or helps a couple tell their story can inspire fresh ideas and broaden our perspective.

How celebrant networking benefits you, the client

You might wonder what celebrants meeting other celebrants has to do with your wedding, funeral or family celebration. The answer is: quite a lot!

1. More thoughtful, personalised ceremonies

Sharing ideas and experiences helps celebrants continue to develop their creativity and find new ways to reflect each person's story, values, personality and wishes.

2. Greater awareness of traditions and options

Conversations with colleagues can broaden a celebrant's understanding of different cultural practices, family traditions, ceremony styles and meaningful ways to honour an occasion.

3. Stronger professional connections

A well-established network can help a celebrant connect clients with suitable venues, musicians, photographers, funeral professionals and other suppliers. This ultimately can make the planning process run more seamlessly.

4. Practical knowledge and professional support

Learning from the experiences of others helps celebrants approach challenges thoughtfully, improve their processes and continue developing their professional practice.

5. A more confident, connected experience

Ultimately, clients benefit when their celebrant is engaged, informed, creative and supported by a strong professional community.

Celebrancy is about people — and so is networking

For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a celebrant is the opportunity to connect with people. My background in corporate relationship management, marketing and event management has taught me the value of building genuine relationships, communicating well and working collaboratively. These skills are just as important in celebrancy as they are in any other people-focused profession.

Through "Celebrant Events", I work with couples, families and individuals to create ceremonies that feel authentic, whether it's a wedding, a farewell, a milestone birthday or another significant life event. I also value the opportunity to connect with other professionals across this sector. Every conversation is a chance to learn something new, share an idea, offer support or discover a better way to serve our clients. Because while every ceremony is unique, our shared purpose is to bring people together and honour the moments that matter.

Celebrating connection this "International Celebrants' Day"

"International Celebrants' Day" is a wonderful reminder to recognise not only the work celebrants do, but also the relationships, knowledge and professional communities that help us do it well.

To my fellow celebrants, thank you for the ideas you share, the support you offer and the care you bring to your work. And to the venues, funeral professionals, musicians, photographers, event specialists and other industry colleagues who collaborate with us, thank you for helping create meaningful experiences for the people we serve.

And if you're currently planning a wedding, arranging a funeral or memorial, or thinking about another important life celebration, remember that choosing your celebrant is about more than finding someone to conduct a ceremony. It's about finding someone who will listen, understand what matters to you and guide you through the process with care and professionalism.
