Nicki Tofler Sydney Funeral Celebrant chats with elderly lady about her funeral wishes over a cup of tea in her beautiful home overlooking the bush.

The greatest gift we can leave for our families is to talk about our funeral wishes before it's too late!

Recently, I spent an afternoon with a lovely woman in her late eighties. She wasn't ill. She wasn't frightened. She simply wanted to make sure her voice would still be heard when she no longer had one.

Over cups of tea at her dining table, we talked about her life, her family, the music that had shaped her, the poems she loved, the people she hoped would speak, and even the support she wanted from a death doula when the time eventually came.

Together, we recorded her wishes for her funeral—not because she expected to die tomorrow, but because she understood that none of us knows what tomorrow brings.

It was one of the most meaningful conversations I've had as a funeral celebrant.

What struck me most wasn't what we wrote down. It was how relieved she felt afterwards.

She told me she felt lighter. She knew that when the time came, her family wouldn't be left wondering, "What would Mum have wanted?" Instead, they would know!

After I had delivered her beautifully bound ceremony, she wrote me a wonderful and heartfelt testimonial, one that I'm proud to share:

"Although I'd known Nicki for some time, sitting down with her as my celebrant was a completely different experience. She gently guided me through every aspect of planning my farewell, asking thoughtful questions and listening with genuine care. Together we chose the music, readings and the people I want involved, and she captured my wishes exactly as I hoped they would be.

What I thought might be a difficult conversation turned out to be one of the most positive and reassuring experiences. I now feel an enormous sense of relief knowing my wishes are clearly documented and that my family won't be left wondering what I would have wanted. It has given me real peace of mind, and I can't recommend the experience highly enough. Instead of feeling like I'd planned for my death, I felt like I'd planned one final gift for my family."

Sadly, conversations about death are still something many families avoid. Often it's because we don't want to upset each other. Sometimes it's because our loved ones don't want to imagine losing us. But avoiding the conversation doesn't stop death from arriving. It simply leaves the people we love having to make difficult decisions during one of the hardest times of their lives.

Talking about your funeral isn't about giving up.

By planning your funeral wishes, you are giving your family a gift of certainty, a gift of clarity and a gift of peace.

As a celebrant, I believe there's something incredibly special about meeting someone while they are still living. I have the opportunity to hear their stories first-hand, understand what matters most to them, learn about their humour, values and personality, and capture the little details that often disappear with time.

When the day eventually comes, I'm not standing in front of a room of strangers trying to piece together a life. I'm honouring someone I've actually had the privilege to know. That makes the ceremony more authentic, more personal and, ultimately, more comforting for those left behind.

If you've ever thought, "I really should write some of this down one day," perhaps today is that day.

You don't need to have every detail worked out. You simply need to start the conversation. Because one day, those conversations become some of the greatest gifts we leave the people we love.

Have you ever thought about recording your own funeral wishes? I'd be honoured to sit down with you, listen to your story, and help create a personal roadmap that reflects your life, values and wishes—giving your family something less worry about when they need it most.
